Communications Specialist, Office of Civic Engagement, Duke University

The Duke Office of Civic Engagement incubates, coordinates and amplifies the various ways that students, faculty and staff work to make a difference in the civic life of our communities. Serving as the hub for civic engagement activities across campus, the Office supports Duke’s collaborations with communities on pressing social challenges.

Position Description:

The communication specialist is responsible for communicating and refining the stories of civic engagement across Duke University. This includes creating effective communication materials, articles, graphics, web content and multi-media products. The communication specialist cultivates partnerships with departments, schools and institutes across campus. In addition, the communication specialist provides administrative support to the office and will provide technical support across various platforms. The communication specialist reports to the assistant director of the Office of Civic Engagement.

Education

Work requires knowledge of basic mathematical, research and communications principles normally acquired through two years of post secondary education.

Experience

Work generally requires four years of clerical or research experience to acquire strong skills in administrative or project research responsibilities as well as accepted office management, communications and research practices.A bachelor’s degree in a field of study directly related to the specific position may be substituted for the education and two years of the experience requirement.OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Departmental Preferences:

  • Evidence of sustained and increasing responsibility or leadership in previous work.
  • Previous civic engagement experience either on or off-campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with diverse groups of faculty, administrators and undergraduate students.
  • The successful applicant will demonstrate skills in multi-media work, will be a strong communicator and able to work independently.

Skills:

  • Superior oral and written communication skills, proofreading and editorial skills
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to handle an evolving range of tasks and priorities

Multi-media skills to maintain website, produce newsletter, video production, audio recordings and to design or edit images

  • Social media skills for various platforms and fluency in web-based platforms and online content management
  • Ability to excel as an independent and flexible worker who easily adapts to evolving university needs.
  • Demonstrable academic interest in a related field.
  • Familiarity with Google analytics, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign preferred
