Founding Director, Community Engaged Research and Practice, Temple University

FOUNDING DIRECTOR, Community Engaged Research and Practice
The Temple University College of Public Health (CPH), devoted to an innovative multidisciplinary educational and research environment that brings a transdisciplinary perspective of health, wellness, and social welfare, seeks a highly accomplished community based research leader to serve as its Founding Director of Community Engaged Research and Practice.

The dynamic home for 17 disciplines, CPH advances the cutting edge of inter-professional research and education, and is experiencing unprecedented growth in its research and educational portfolios. The College currently receives more than $20M in research funding, offers 51 academic programs, and partners with more than 500 community agencies regionally, nationally, and globally. Over the next several years, the College will continue to expand its footprint with new facilities and will increase the size of its faculty significantly.

It is in this context that the Founding Director, reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and serving as a convener and facilitator, will lead growth of the College’s interdisciplinary, community-engaged research activity: identifying new opportunities for collaboration that capitalize on the expertise of faculty across disciplines within CPH and across the university and fostering strong, reciprocal relationships with existing and potential community partners.

The Founding Director will also lead and help shape the strategic direction of the College’s Center for Social Policy and Community Development (CSPCD). Founded over 40 years ago, CSPCD is dedicated to advancing the quality of life for Philadelphia’s most vulnerable residents through evidence-based social and health service programming and evaluation. The Center partners with scholars, students, and practitioners in grassroots and human service organizations to address issues that impact the health and well-being of individuals and communities, building capacity by encouraging the creative exchange of ideas and resources between the University, the North Philadelphia community, and beyond. Today, much of CSPCD’s efforts are focused on workforce development and related activity. The new Director will play an important role in expanding faculty engagement and the integration of empirical research activity into the work of the Center.

Integral to the role of the Founding Director will be education and mentoring of faculty and graduate and post-graduate trainees, and grassroots organizations in public health and social welfare community-engaged research. S/he will also lead efforts to provide design and technical expertise, identify new funding sources, and connect researchers with community-based organizations and government entities to form mutually beneficial partnerships. Our goal is to conduct research that is policy relevant, actionable and reflective of the needs of our community partners.

The Founding Director of Community Engaged Research and Practice will bring evidence of success leading, coordinating, and facilitating interdisciplinary research teams, a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, along with strong experience in community-based public health research. The successful candidate will be granted a faculty appointment in a department appropriate to expertise and interests. Nationally recognized community engaged public health research and a track record of community collaborations is expected, along with a strong record of scholarly, peer-reviewed publications and extramural research funding consistent with appointment at the Associate or full Professor level.

Temple University offers competitive salaries and generous start-up packages. Candidates may also join the College of Public Health with established research teams, including tenure track and non-tenure track research faculty.
