Civic Engagement Coordinator, Appalachian Center for Civic Life, Emory and Henry College

The Appalachian Center for Civic Life serves as the primary resource for civic engagement, volunteerism, and course-based service initiatives at Emory & Henry College. The Center coordinates and supports an array of co-curricular service/civic engagement programs across campus, houses the Bonner Scholars Program, supports course-based community learning experiences, and houses the academic program in Civic Innovation, a highly experiential, interdisciplinary major with an emphasis on community development, leadership, and social justice.

The Civic Engagement Coordinator will support the course-based and co-curricular civic engagement initiatives at the College. The Coordinator will report to the Associate Director and work closely and collaboratively with other Center program staff/administration.
Responsibilities:

Program Support :
● Build and maintain ongoing relationships with community partners, support them in hosting students as well as being connected with the college as a whole.
● Work with Director to develop and deploy a range of long-term, interdisciplinary outcome-focused, place-based projects utilizing a range of student developmental levels and skill sets
● Work with the Associate Director to support faculty members as they develop and embed service-learning and civic engagement components in their course(s).
● Support and advise service-based campus organizations and student leaders.
● Oversee Appalachian Center work-study-funded programs ○ Appalachian Center Associates ○ Work-study clerical staff
● Serve as liaison and facilitator with Project Ampersand
● Support and advise the ongoing development of College’s intentional break program.
● Facilitate evaluation tools, coordinate and/or promote trainings and workshops for faculty, community partners and students.
● Supervise student staff supporting service-learning work.
● Research and maintain best practices in risk-management for community-based learning experiences. ● Work with the Associate Director in planning and implementing annual Civic Innovation Institute.
Communications and Outreach

● Develop and implement a communications plan for marketing and outreach efforts to the internal (E&H) community as well as the external community, department’s website, newsletter, brochures, and social media.

Assessment and Planning
● Support and deepen assessment work as it pertains to service-learning and overall department goals. Collaborate with College offices that support the department’s assessment efforts.
● Assist with overall strategic planning of the Center.

Position Qualifications Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. ● Minimum of two (2) years of experience in related field, preferably in higher education and/or nonprofits. ● Understanding of campus-community collaboration, service-learning and experiential learning. ● Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the current issues and future direction of service-learning. ● Commitment to social justice. ● Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership and administrative abilities. ● Excellent oral and written communication skills. ● Experience and commitment working with diverse student and constituent populations. ● Ability to work independently and part of a team. ● Experience in supervising professional and/or student staff. ● Ability to organize a diverse set of responsibilities and manage a number of tasks simultaneously. ● Commitment to student learning, and understanding of building campus and community partnerships. ● Experience with project management around communications, outreach, marketing and/or grant writing. ● Knowledge of and experience with social media and website development.
