Assistant Director of Service-Learning Abroad, West Chester University (PA)

Join a vibrant campus community whose excellence is reflected in its diversity and student success. West Chester University of Pennsylvania’s Division of Student Affairs seeks applicants for the Assistant Director of Service-Learning Abroad. This is a one-year temporary appointment.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, the Assistant Director works under the general direction of the Director of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs and in collaboration with the Center for International Programs (CIP) to promote and support faculty led service-learning abroad programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the primary adviser to faculty and staff facilitating international service-learning trips.
  • Liaise between Center for International Programs and Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs to assist faculty and staff with developing international service-learning trips that meet the CIP program proposal guidelines.
  • Meet regularly with faculty and staff coordinating service-learning abroad programs to assist with program development, recruitment, retention of program participants, risk management, vetting of service opportunities offered by affiliated partner programs, pre-trip departure preparations, and integration of service-learning curriculum.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to prospective faculty and staff interested in developing new service-learning programs abroad, including promotion at New Faculty Orientation.
  • Lead service abroad program development consultations and workshops for staff and faculty focused on best practices related to international service, creating meaningful reflective dialogue, forging sustainable partnerships, and ethical service abroad.
  • Provide leadership on marketing, outreach, and promotional efforts to students for all service-learning abroad trips, including outreach through academic departments, social media, class presentations, and student organizations.
  • Promote international service-learning experiences at Volunteer Fairs, Study Abroad Fairs, New Student Orientation, International Education Week, Global Leadership Series, and other CIP and OSLVP initiatives.
  • Assist students in selecting an appropriate service-learning abroad experience by providing information and guidance on program requirements, costs, and scholarships.
  • Coordinate with academic departments to develop a process for providing credit for faculty led service-learning programs abroad.
  • Act as a contact for risk and crisis management for service-learning abroad programs involving WCU students and faculty.
  • In collaboration with the Center for International Programs, ensure all documentation for service abroad programs, including faculty and staff led programs and those offered through affiliated partner programs, meet University and State requirements.
  • Collaborate with key University departments to ensure student support and proper transition away from and return to campus in areas such as housing, financial aid, bursar/billing, etc.
  • Facilitate student leader selection, orientation, and training for Student Trip Leaders on service-learning abroad programs when appropriate.
  • Contribute to ongoing evaluation and assessment of service-learning programs, including creating and updating student learning outcomes for international service-learning trips.
  • Advise student organizations interested in creating new international volunteer programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in related field (e.g., college student personnel, student affairs, international education, etc.) and 2 years of professional experience in service-learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A successful applicant will demonstrate the following skills and abilities in his/her application materials: professional history working with international partners; collaborative work with faculty or staff on education abroad programming; ability to multitask, prioritize, and work collaboratively to maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and community partners; excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from different cultures; project management and planning experience; budgetary experience; college student advising experience; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and social media tools.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Starting salary is $45,027. Excellent benefits package including undergraduate tuition fee waiver for self and dependents. Applicants must successfully complete interview process to be considered as a finalist. Anticipated start date for this position is July 23, 2016.
