The Office of Leadership & Service-Learning (LSL) is currently seeking applications for the Associate Director for Curricular Programs. Reporting to the Director of LSL, this position serves as the main point of contact for students, faculty, and community partners involved in service-learning courses and leadership initiatives in the curriculum. Supports student development through a series of service and leadership programs designed to assist students in fostering the skills, knowledge, competencies, and values necessary to become effective leaders and citizens. Works with LSL director to develop faculty involvement in service-learning and leadership education in the curriculum, and offers assistance with course development.

Serves as a primary liaison between campus and community-based organizations working to build transformative campus-community partnerships. Has oversight responsibility for service-learning course assessments and OrgSync database management. Strengthens existing partnerships through partner support, workshops, online modules, and partner gatherings. Responsibilities also include: communications & marketing, voter engagement initiatives, Williams leadership scholarship, Leadership Resource Team, and the ECU Leadership Institute. Participates fully in the activities of the LSL and in other duties or university committees as requested by the Director of LSL. Supervises an Assistant Director, graduate assistant, and some undergraduate student staff.

He/she will implement & practice student development theory as it relates to job responsibilities that promote the understanding of regional, state, national, and global issues. The Associate Director supports integrative learning experiences through effective planning, implementation and assessment of current initiatives and develops additional experiences that foster community engagement and responsible citizenship. Responsibilities on this position have a direct impact on the quality of students’ educational experiences and interaction with their peers, as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of university budgetary practices, risk management, problem solving skills, and contract negotiation; independent decision making and critical thinking skills are necessary.

This position will work with faculty & community partners through individual consultations to establish appropriate service-learning sites for service-learning courses at ECU; Support faculty to ensure communication of logistics and relevant information on service-learning sites through in-class presentations and/or individual consultations with service-learning faculty members. Develop LSL’s community partner selection process, including managing ongoing evaluation and assessment of partnerships; oversee development of Community Advisory Board. Assist with training faculty to integrate service-learning & leadership development into their courses, providing workshops, consultation, and access to regional and national conference opportunities. Assist with organization and implementation of Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program. Attend and participate fully in service-learning committee meetings. Work with Director to ensure appropriate recognition of service-learning faculty and community partners for their efforts on behalf of service-learning. Engage in ongoing professional development related to service-learning,

leadership education, community-campus partnerships, etc. Attend in-services, gatherings and meetings of the Division of Student Affairs and other professional development opportunities, especially those offered by Human Resources. Keep current with service-learning theory, methods and initiatives. Work as part of team to advance the mission of the LSL. Nights and/or weekend work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field required (education, higher education administration, college student personnel administration, leadership studies, or other relevant area of study)
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience supervising and advising staff
  • Experience developing and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with Student Affairs educators, community partner agencies, students, and faculty
  • Experience working well with diverse groups, including experience with multicultural education
  • Experience working with university students, particularly through the facilitation of structured reflection
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and project management skills

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience coordinating civic engagement, service-learning, and/or leadership development programs
  • Experience working with faculty to integrate service-learning in the curriculum
