Service-Learning Team Leader, NECHAMA (Jewish Disaster Response Corps)

Job Description: Leading service­ learning trips for college-aged student volunteers in San Marcos, Texas during January and March, 2016 to help rebuild disaster-stricken communities. This position reports to the JDRC Program manager.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a role model and leader for 100+ college students from around the country.
  • Participating in staff training prior to the trips (mandatory, but dates may be flexible).
  • Supporting the daily operations of JDRC volunteer base camp in Wimberley, TX, including meal preparation and clean up, transportation needs, and supervision/safety on work site.
  • Supporting all Program Staff in facilitation of educational curriculum which include: reflections, group discussions, speakers panels, and Jewish experiences such as Shabbat.
  • Working collaboratively and engaging with JDRC program staff, Hillel staff, Program Intern and local partners to provide a safe and meaningful experience for students.
  • Troubleshooting obstacles and last­minute changes in plans with a positive attitude.
  • Supervising students both on and off­site, leading by example and enforcing safety standards.

About Us:

The Jewish Disaster Response Corps (JDRC) is a program of NECHAMA ­ Jewish Response to Disaster. Since its founding, JDRC has mobilized hundreds of Jewish and interfaith college student groups to aid in post­disaster rebuilding efforts across the United States. In 2016, the JDRC will be bringing college student volunteer groups on Alternative Breaks to assist in long term rebuilding efforts in San Marcos, Texas from over 10 Universities nationwide. JDRC service­learning trips include: volunteer field rebuilding work, educational programming, team building exercises, evenings out in the local area, connection to locals in the San Marcos and Austin communities, and a pluralistic Shabbat (Jewish Sabbath) experience.

Qualifications:

Valid Driver’s License, ability to drive a 15­-passenger van (age 21+ preferred), positive attitude, excellent problem­solving abilities, outgoing personality, cultural sensitivity & ability to work well with diverse populations, willingness to go outside of your comfort zone, leadership skills. Experience running trips, facilitating Jewish education, and/or working in disaster relief is a plus. You will be required to submit to a Motor Vehicle Record Check which must be approved by our insurance provider to be eligible for this position.

Compensation:

Room, board, and transportation (to/from, and within Texas) are all provided. The Team Leader will also receive a commensurate stipend at the end of each program.

Start Date & Hours:

Training will begin prior to January 10th, but the training schedule is flexible.

Program Dates:

Winter Break Trips (2016): Jan 10­-17, Jan 17-­24
Spring Break Trips (2016): Feb 28­-Mar 6, Mar 6-13, Mar 13­-20, Mar 20­-27

One­ or two additional days of setup and close down will take place before and after each program period.
