Associate Director, Center for Civic Leadership, Rice University

Reporting to and under the general direction of the Director of Programs and Partnerships, the Associate Director will develop, implement, and manage experiential civic leadership programs focused on civic based research and design and directly relevant to the Certificate in Civic Leadership. The Associate Director will hold primary responsibility for the Houston Action Research Team (HART) program in which small, interdisciplinary teams of Rice undergraduate students conduct engaged research in collaboration with city offices and community organizations to address issues and challenges facing Houston and its citizens. This work will be completed as part of a cross-geographic and/or cross-program team of other CCL staff colleagues. S/he will assist in the cultivation and management of university-community partnerships, faculty partnerships, and alumni networks that enrich civic leadership programs. S/he will work directly with faculty to develop academically grounded research and design projects that benefit the community. The Associate Director may lead special projects or initiatives, serve as the team’s direct report to the Director of Programs and Partnerships, develop and lead workshops, and advise graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants. S/he may also have the opportunity to teach courses and/or serve as the CCL undergraduate advisor.

Education Required:

Master’s degree (MPP/MA) – Ph.D. preferred

Experience Required (2 years):

– Professional experience in undergraduate education at a college or university, in government, or in a community- or service-oriented non-profit organization.

– Experience designing and implementing academic research or design projects.

– Experience fostering leadership through community-based research, service learning, social entrepreneurship, and/or professional development.

– Experience working collaboratively with faculty on academic research.

– Experience in teaching and/or facilitation.

 

Skills Required:

– Training in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.

– Excellent skills in advising students, collaborating, communicating with diverse audiences, and managing projects.

– Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with internal and external partners.

– Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

– Demonstrated leadership skills.

– Must be able to demonstrate professionalism at all times.

– Must be creative, service oriented and organized.

– Must be able to work independently and as part of a team – both as a team member and in a leadership capacity.

– Must be able to work in a self-directed, autonomous manner.

 

Salary: $50,000-52,000
