Director, Center for Civic Engagement, Salem State University

Salem State University seeks an innovative, collaborative, and inspiring leader to serve as founding director of its Center for Civic Engagement. The director will be an advocate within the university and across the region for an expanded commitment to civic engagement. The director will articulate a cohesive and compelling vision for the center and work to engrain civic engagement into the institutional identity and culture. S/he will build collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations, coordinate academic and co-curricular programs pertaining to civic engagement across the university, and work to co-integrate the community with the university.

Job Requirements
• Develop and implement a systematic long-term plan for institutionalizing civic engagement
• Manage the daily operations of the Center for Civic Engagement
• Partner with faculty members to develop and implement service-learning and other experiential learning opportunities
• Provide leadership and expertise in establishing and sharing best practices for service-learning and co-curricular service with faculty members, students, staff and community partners
• Cultivate and sustain multi-layered, reciprocal community partnerships that give the campus community opportunities to participate in a wide range of civic engagement activities
• Initiate and maintain collaboration with other offices and centers involved with community service activities
• Develop programs and projects that allow students to learn about social and public issues as engaged citizens
• Collaborate with grants office and institutional advancement to support civic engagement
• Provide programs and resources to support civic engagement initiatives on and off-campus
• Create and implement tracking and evaluation procedures for recording the impact of civic engagement on students, faculty, staff and the greater community
• Conducts ongoing and regular evaluation and assessment of civic engagement efforts at the university
• Raise awareness about local issues and needs that can be actively and effectively addressed by campus community members
• Serve as liaison with community partners, including site visits, memoranda of understanding, agency orientations, safety assurances, etc.
• Develop functioning Advisory Council for Civic Engagement
• Oversee Hall of Fame event honoring student, staff and faculty involvement with civic engagement

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree
• Minimum of three years of demonstrable experience with community-based learning and civic engagement in a college environment
• Demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders and constituency groups including administrators, faculty, students, staff, community partners, and external constituents
• Strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and manage detailed work

Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD with experience embedding service-learning in credit-bearing courses
• Experience partnering with faculty members to develop and implement community-based learning projects within academic courses
• Experience working with offices and groups within student life on coordinated service efforts and co-curricular service requirements
• Experience developing and writing reports/grants for various constituencies
• Experience managing academic budgets
• Three or more years supervisory experience in a higher-education environment
