Assistant Director of Student Life for Community Engagement, University of Colorado – Denver

The Assistant Director of Student Life for Community Engagement is responsible for promoting and raising awareness of service-based learning experiences among students, faculty, and the local community by managing programs and activities that support community engagement campus-wide. The Community Engagement Program has seen rapid growth and demand at CU Denver and is still developing. The goal of the program is to enhance student learning by increasing co-curricular student community engagement activities and strengthening academic service-learning. The position is supervised by the Director of the Office of Student Life.

Program Coordination:
•Create dynamic programming as well as expand existing programs related to Community Engagement.
•Coordinate and plan Volunteer Fairs, monthly Stop & Serve events, First Year Seminar service-learning projects, volunteer experiences for student organizations, Summer Opportunity Fair, CU Welcome Week and a variety of other service-related programs and events.
•Chair Alternative Breaks Committee, which plans out of state service trips throughout the spring, summer, fall, and winter including supervising student leaders, selecting locations, and planning service projects.
•Coordinate annual CU Denver Dance Marathon a campus wide engagement event benefitting a non-profit in the greater Denver community
•Coordinate, promote and manage the CU Denver Food Pantry
•Assist with the CU in the Community Program by assembling service opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
•Supervise student hourly and volunteer staff involved in implementing community engagement activities
•Assists with other needs of the Office of Student Life

Advising:
•Advise student organizations that promote and facilitate the use community engagement activities, including providing training; serving as advisor for any service related student clubs/organizations
•Provide regular individual advising and assistance to students seeking academically related and co-curricular community engagement experiences.
•Provide presentations to classes, student clubs and organizations and campus events

Community Partnerships:
•Network with community partners to establish contacts and opportunities for student service experiences
•Assess community needs in the metro-Denver area and develop campus-wide approaches to create partnerships that promote the public good
•Provide resources and support to community organizations to further develop campus partnerships and promote effective placements for CU Denver students
•Develop and lead meetings and workshops designed to assist community partners in facilitating service-learning experiences for students
•Complete 10-12 Community Partner Site Visits/On-Campus Meetings per semester

Service-Learning Coordination:
•Assist faculty in developing and implementing service-learning courses; provide resources and logistical support; and assist them in defining educational service-learning goals and community service placements as needed
•Serve as a liaison between community agencies and faculty as needed
•Assist faculty in developing appropriate evaluation tools to assess student learning and the achievement of the course objectives related to service-learning as needed
•Coordinate faculty development workshops as needed

Administration:
•Prepare monthly reports and maintain files and documentation regarding student experiences
•Manage overall program evaluation and data gathering/reporting processes
•Assist directors in seeking grant funding and financial support for Community Engagement programs through sponsorships and student fee funding
•Represent the Office of Student Life on committees related to community engagement
•Work with the Director to develop/maintain a more clear, concise, assessable and structured work flow process for the community engagement area

Additional Responsibilities may include:
•Assisting with other departmental sponsored events and activities (E.g. CU Launch, Welcome Week, Convocation, Senior Send Off and New Student Orientation).
•Communication and collaboration with engagement efforts with the Assistant Director of Student Life for Student Activities and the Student Assistance office at the Anschutz Medical Campus.
•Communication and collaborations with CU Denver faculty, staff and students.
•Communication and collaborations with the Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Office of Student Activities and the Community College of Denver’s Office of Student Life and the Auraria Higher Education Center Student Auxiliary services.
•Serve in other areas as directed by the Director of Student Life.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
•At least one year of experience with community engagement programs at a college or university
•Two years of graduate work/assistant-ship experience may be substituted for one year professional experience.
•Experience presenting to a variety of audiences including faculty, community agencies, classes, student clubs and organizations, and campus events

•At least one year experience supervising student employees and/or volunteers

Desired Qualifications

•Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs. or a related field/program area

•Two years of experience in planning, implementing and managing budgets of special events
•At least one year experience advising students or student organizations
•One year professional experience working within university service-learning programs, social justice programming, and/or work with community organizations
•One year professional experience developing, facilitating and leading workshops, meetings and training sessions
•Previous experience working with college students in an urban university setting
•Experience in the assessment of programs which includes developing program evaluations, collecting data and preparing monthly reports
