Assistant Director, Beyond the Classroom Living and Learning Program, University of Maryland, College Park

Beyond the Classroom (BTC) is a selective, interdisciplinary living and learning program dedicated to equipping upper-level undergraduate students with the educational and professional leadership skills that support understanding and constructive contribution to civic engagement and social change in a global context. By drawing on the University of Maryland’s comparative advantage in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, students address significant civic and social issues through internship, community service, and civic learning experiences in the world’s largest nonprofit and civil society sector. BTC allows students from all disciplines to develop and realize their potential for responsible civic leadership at the local, national and global levels through a three-semester program of academic, experiential, and service components that offer catalytic and transformative learning opportunities outside the classroom.

We are seeking an Assistant Director who will engage actively with and contribute to the program’s intellectual agenda to prepare students for civic leadership on vital public issues through exciting internship experiences and academic opportunities. The Assistant Director will play a key role in the program’s ongoing teaching responsibilities as well as in managing and contributing to the program’s administrative, curricular, communications and outreach capacities. The Assistant Director will work with the Program’s Director in implementing meaningful internship placements for students; teaching one 3-credit course on civic issues each year and at least one section of UNIV 326 each fall, spring and summer; coordinating programs and activities; and managing outreach and communications with key campus and off-campus constituencies. This program is a partnership with the Department of Residence Life and the Capstone Management Company and is housed in a 12-month apartment comm unity.
