Research Director, Johnson Center for Philanthropy Community Research Institute, Grand Valley State University

The Research Director is responsible for establishing an annual research agenda with partnership organizations; implementing this agenda on a rolling basis; hiring, supervising, and managing research staff; raising revenue through contracts for service; working closely with outside funders and organizations regarding their applied research needs and the development of technology tools to assist them in their work; and negotiating data sharing and other contractual agreements for JCP with partners. The Research Director represents JCP in the research community nationally, in Michigan, West Michigan and within the University, requiring advanced interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills.

• Strategic, sustainability, and long-term planning for CRI
• Guidance for development of action plans for implementation of projects
• Selection, hiring, and supervision of research staff
• Participate in JCP executive staff meetings as a member of the senior leadership team
• Develop and manage program sustainability
• Develop and maintain partnerships with key local, state, and national organizations including contracted services and data sharing agreements
• Works with Advisory Committee
• Occasional travel in state and overnight travel
• Some teaching and/or guest lecturing within the university community
• Other duties as assigned
• Collaborate with other researchers in the greater university community.

Required Qualifications and Education
• PhD required with three to five years of experience in social/community research
• Previous experience supervising researchers
• Strong public communication skills
• Strong technology skills
• Demonstrated track record in successfully securing grants and research contracts
• Proficiency with computer applications, statistical software and web based resources
• Demonstrated ability to work in and contribute to a team atmosphere
• Strong knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation design
• Demonstrated knowledge of the University IRB process and external human subject regulations

Preferred Qualifications and Education

• Demonstrated ability to work with local, regional and national philanthropic organizations and nonprofits
• Previous experience in a nonprofit setting
• Previous experience working in an Academic setting
