Assistant Director for Civic Engagement Programs, Davidson College

This is a full-time, 12 month Student Life professional within the Davidson College Center for Civic Engagement responsible for coordinating service leadership curriculum and events, directing the summer service odyssey pre-orientation program, overseeing all aspects of the Federal Community Service Work-study program and advising the alternative breaks program. The Asst. Director reports to the Associate Dean of Student / Director of Civic Engagement and works collaboratively with other staff in the Center to advise student organizations through the Civic Engagement Council, cultivate and sustain relationships with community partners, and design curriculum modules for the Bonner program. The following are the key responsibilities of the position:

  • Develop service leadership curriculum and coordinate events (e.g., workshops, retreats) for service leaders through the Center.Master’s Degree in higher education or student personnel required. At least 2 years related experience working with college students in the area of civic engagement, community service or community-based learning. Experience with program design, development and assessment. Ability to build relationships with a wide range of audiences including nonprofit partners, foundations, students, staff and faculty. Strong communication skills. Appreciation for role that liberal arts institutions play with the community. Familiarity with web tools.

  • Direct the Summer Service Odyssey pre-orientation program including the recruitment, hiring and training of student leaders; design of publicity and registration for the program; organization of a schedule for three sessions each summer; coordination of key logistical details including food and lodging; outreach to key community partners; curriculum development , and assessment.
  • Advise service-based leadership groups
  • Oversee the Federal Community Service Work-Study (FCSWS) program
  • Oversee the implementation of nine yearly Alternative Break trips over Fall and Spring Breaks and related programming.
  • Write and edit web-based and print publications and assessment reports.
